The 2010-2011 Football Market

In this market you can make real money buying and selling virtual shares of the players in the NFL. The market will last for the season and we will be working hard to make sure you like StarStreet more and more every day. Please make sure to give us your feedback, we are in learning mode and our main goal is to make sure you love StarStreet.

For the time being, this market is invite only. Once invited you are allowed to (and for now only able to) deposit $25 through PayPal. You will be able to withdraw the money in your account at the conclusion of the market.

How the market works

StarStreet’s market is zero-sum. That means that every single dollar invested in the market (initially through an IPO) is eventually paid out of the market (through a retirement). From your end trading on StarStreet is basically a 50/50 game (minus our small commission). If you are doing better than the other traders, you will be making money.

The Details

Players initially enter the market through an initial player offering (IPO). The IPOs are blind yankee auctions. The amount of shares offered for a player and the distribution time are set, and at the distribution time the top bids for the shares available get the shares. The total of the winning bids becomes the player’s total value and the player’s book value is their total value divided by the shares outstanding.

Once on the market, the players trade in constant comparison. A trade occurs when two traders match up (one as a seller the other as a buyer) on a price and number of shares. With every trade every player’s book value adjusts. The book value is the price per share this is paid out to the shareholders when the shares are retired from the market. In this market the shares will be retired at the end of the 2010-2011 NFL season.

How to Trade

To Buy:

1. Locate the player whose share(s) you wish to purchase and click on “Buy” or the price in the “Buy Now” column. The price in the “Buy Now” column is the lowest price that another trader is offering to sell the share(s) for.

2. In the order pad, you can adjust number of shares and the price per share you wish to pay and when you are ready, click “Buy”. Your order will either be instantly matched, (that is, shares will be sold to you at the price you have bid and in the quantity you requested), partially matched, or unmatched. Unmatched orders are listed in the Pending Orders section and are live until they are fully matched or until you cancel them. The live orders are listed in the market so that other traders can match them.

To Sell, simply follow the above instructions for buying, but replace “Buy” with “Sell”.

To Bid on an IPO:

If an IPO is available you will see the "IPOs" button on the top of the trading page. To bid on an IPO enter the number of shares and the price per share you wish to bid and click on “place bid”. When you place a bid cash is taken from your free funds and held in your locked funds. If you are awarded shares, the appropriate amount will be taking from your locked funds, with the rest being returned to your free funds.
